Secure Your Home Before Leaving on Vacation

Here are some of the things you should do around your home to keep it safe home with lights onwhile you’re away.

If you are planning to go away on vacation this summer, there are many things that you need to take care of before you go.  For instance, there are several things that you can do to secure your home before your departure.  Here’s what you can do to keep your home safe while you’re away.

  • Program Your Lights on a Timer

You do not want other people to know that your home is unoccupied.  This is why you should set your lights on a timer before leaving on vacation.  When your lights turn on in the evening and off again around bedtime, criminals that are watching your home will think that someone is present, and they will move on to their next target.

  • Arrange for Mail Pick-Up

If you allow your mail to pile up in your mailbox, then this will indicate that no one is home.  This could make your home a target for burglary while you are away.  To ensure that criminals aren’t tipped off by an overflowing mailbox, ask a neighbor, friend, or family member to collect your mail for you until you return from vacation.

  • Secure All Windows and Doors

While this seems obvious, many homeowners forget to check their windows and doors before leaving on a trip.  To ensure that you are not offering criminals an easy point of entry, make sure that all your windows and doors are closed and locked.  Additionally, make sure you secure other points of entry like garage doors and doggy doors.

These are some of the things that you should do around your home before leaving on vacation.  Want another way to protect your home?  Then make sure you have the right homeowners insurance in place.  For assistance with all your home coverage needs, contact the team at ISU-Wissink Insurance today.
