Rain Driving Safety
Living in California means getting to enjoy warm, sunny skies for the majority of the year. However, with a “Godzilla” El Nino predicted to hit Southern California this fall and winter, you may have to dig deep into the back of your closet to find your umbrella. Before the rainy season hits, it is also important to make sure that you know how to stay safe on the road during the rain. Keep these rain safety tips in mind the next time the sky opens up.
- Use extreme caution whenever you are driving in the rain, especially during the first couple of hours of the rain. Grease and oil that builds up on the road can make for very dangerous and slippery conditions on the road when it gets wet.
- Drive much slower than usual. Wet pavement can cause your tires to lose traction and send you sliding across the road. Driving slower can also give you more room to react to any issues on the road ahead of your vehicle.
- Try to avoid driving through any puddles. Not only can puddles cause you to hydroplane, but you never know what is under the water or how deep the water is. Splashing through a puddle can also impair your visibility and the visibility of drivers near you on the road.
- If you feel your vehicle start to hydroplane, do not hit your brakes. Instead, take your foot off the gas and keep your wheel straight until your tires regain traction.
- Never use cruise control in the rain since it does not allow you to have as much control over your vehicle.
