Secure Your Coverage Before The Upcoming Deadline
February 15th does not mark the day that you wake up in a cold sweat because you forget to send your sweetheart a gift on Valentine’s Day. It could, however, be a day that you wake in a panic for a different reason if you have not secured health insurance coverage.
Under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Americans who do not have health coverage through their workplace and who do not qualify for Medicare need to secure health insurance coverage during each year’s open enrollment period. These periods are windows during which Americans can secure any plan in the marketplace. We are currently in a period of open enrollment, but it ends on February 15th.
What does this mean for you? If you already had marketplace coverage in 2014, this is a time to review your coverage. New plans have been added in 2015, so reviewing your coverage could yield better savings on a better policy for you. If you would like to change plans, you need to do so before the February 15th deadline.
If you do not have coverage, it is important to get it before the deadline. If you do not, you will only be able to secure one of a limited number of short-term insurance plans for 2015. Furthermore, you will be subject to penalty fees when you file your 2015 taxes. This year, those penalties are $325 per adult or 2% of your household income whichever is greater.
