May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and is a great time to get involved with the cause. It is also the perfect time to see what small changes you can make to help with your own skin cancer prevention plan.
In the Orange County area, be sure to check out the 8th annual iCureMelanoma 5k run/walk on Saturday, May 3rd. This 5k was started by Dr. William Baugh of Full Spectrum Dermatology solely to help find a cure for melanoma. Although their main goal is to raise funds for aggressive research of the disease, there is also the added benefit of being able to educate the public of the dangers of melanoma. The event starts the Friday prior to the run, where participants can pick up their race packets and receive free skin cancer screenings, courtesy of Full Spectrum Dermatology. The day of the run starts with a pancake breakfast at 6 am and continues all day long with different running groups and activities. The iCureMelanoma 5k has transformed from a run with barely a couple hundred runners, to an event with almost 1,500 participants and over 50 different vendors.
If you are still going to be in the Los Angeles area in August, the Skin Cancer Foundation, in partnership with Rite Aid pharmacy, will be giving away free skin cancer screenings. Their “Road to Healthy Skin Tour” will be going across the country and will be stopping at various Rite Aid locations including: Glendale on August 23rd, Beverly Hills on August 25, Santa Monica on August 26th, and finally El Segundo on August 28th. With summer winding down, this is a good time to make sure you were protected in the summer sun.
When it comes to your own skin cancer prevention plan, a few small changes can save your skin. Making sure to stay in the shade while outside, putting on generous amounts of sunscreen on a daily basis, and avoiding all forms of tanning can help keep you safe in the hot summer sun.
